Best time to visit West Lake in four seasons
The best time to visit West Lake depends on what you want to see. Spring is for fresh tea and mild days, summer for lotus and heat, autumn for osmanthus and the most comfortable temperatures, winter for quiet lake paths and cold nights. None of these draws has a fixed date, and none comes with a guarantee.
If you plan to see the tea villages, start with our page on Hangzhou excursions, which lists tea village visits, lake cruises and day trips. For temperatures and rainfall by month, see the Hangzhou weather page.

Which season suits you
Weather figures are monthly averages for Hangzhou city.
| Season | What draws visitors | Weather by average | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Spring (March to May) | Fresh Longjing tea, mild days, Qingming holiday | Highs 13.7 to 25.1 °C, rain 115 to 159 mm | Wetter, and busy in holiday weeks |
| Summer (June to August) | Lotus, long evenings on the water | Highs 28.4 to 33.1 °C, rain 129 to 185 mm | Heat and the early-summer plum rain |
| Autumn (September to November) | Osmanthus, comfortable walking weather | Highs 16.9 to 27.4 °C, rain 58 to 171 mm | Holiday crowds in late September and early October |
| Winter (December to February) | Quiet paths, the Broken Bridge in the cold | Highs 8.0 to 10.8 °C, rain 48 to 88 mm | Cold nights, earlier closing times |
For most first-time visitors, October and November or April are the best fit. Autumn gives mild temperatures and, by the averages, less rain than spring or summer. April suits you if tea is the main reason for the trip.

Tea, lotus and osmanthus
The three seasonal draws, and how far you can rely on them.
Spring tea
Pre-Qingming tea is the Longjing picked before the Qingming festival. The start of picking changes each year, so no fixed date can be given. In 2026 picking was under way by 23 March. The Qingming holiday itself, 4 to 6 April in 2026, is not the whole harvest window.
Longjing tea villages →Summer lotus
Early flowers can appear from mid-June, and the main bloom falls between mid-July and mid-August. Lotus is tied to the weather, so treat any date as an estimate. Lotus at Quyuan is one of the Ten Scenes.
The Ten Scenes →Autumn osmanthus
Osmanthus belongs to the autumn season in Hangzhou. The first flowers differ from year to year, and you cannot count on a particular weekend in September or October.
Public holidays and crowds
Public holidays are the periods when more people visit and travel gets harder. The 2026 dates were: Qingming 4 to 6 April, Labour Day 1 to 5 May, Mid-Autumn Festival 25 to 27 September and National Day 1 to 7 October. Make-up workdays fell on 20 September and 10 October. In 2026 the Mid-Autumn and National Day holidays did not run together as one block.
Dates move from year to year, so check the holiday calendar for your own trip. If you prefer fewer people, choose days outside these windows, and go early in the day to the lakeside paths and Lingyin Temple. No season is guaranteed to be quiet.

Winter, evenings and opening hours
Daylight and seasons change what is open when.
Winter at the lake
One of the Ten Scenes, the Broken Bridge in Lingering Snow, is named for snow at the bridge. A snowfall is not guaranteed, but winter days at 8.0 to 10.8 °C are workable for walks if you dress warmly.
Shorter opening hours in winter
Leifeng Pagoda is open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. from 1 May to 31 October, and from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. from 1 November to 15 March. The island boats are sold until 4 p.m. from 16 November to 15 February and until 5 p.m. from 1 April to 31 August.
Leifeng Pagoda →Evenings at the lake
The music fountain runs one show daily at 7:30 p.m. in the autumn and winter plan, from 12 October 2026 to 14 April 2027. It is a separate event from the evening stage show.
